General Advice for Floor Preparation and Repair
How to prepare new concrete for a floor coating - New concrete should be left for generally 4-6 weeks after laying before applying any paint or floor coating. Cement particles rise to the surface of concrete when laid and can prevent penetration and adhesion of the coating. Before applying any coating the concrete floor must be cleaned and swept to remove any general dirt and reduce the alkalinity of the concrete. The floor must be cleaned and we recommend our Chemiphase product, Citraclean, which will help reduce the alkalinity and will remove general grime and prepare the concrete for the initial floor coating. The concrete must then be flushed with clean water and allowed to dry out.
How to prepare dirty, bare concrete for a floor coating
Often a good sweep is enough to remove dirt/dust. Citraclean can be used to remove dirt from bare concrete surfaces and provide a key on smooth surfaces.
How to clean greasy, oily concrete for a floor coating
Oil and grease can removed using Citraclean which is extremely effective at lifting and removing grease and oil out of concrete. Citraclean can be used on most painted surfaces but if in doubt, test a small area first. Citraclean can be used on all surfaces including paint, asphalt and composite floors.
How to prepare screed floors for a floor coating
Sand and cement screeds are generally weaker and more porous than concrete. Where two coats may suffice on concrete, three or four may be necessary to avoid patchy finish on sand and screeds. Generally they are very dusty and a good sweep will remove dirt. Do not acid etch sand and cement screeds. Apply the coating direct allowing for additional coats. Alternatively apply a sealer to reduce porosity and then two coats of paint.
